Impure Truth (Short Film Noir)

Film Noir Evaluation

Recently on our course we had to learn about film Noirs and do a bit of research about them before producing one our self's. We did this project in groups of 5. My group members were Eyyaz, Jacq, Mohammed and Dennis.

Before we came up with our own idea we first did some research and both studied old film noirs like The Big sleep and modern film noirs like Watch men and Batman a dark knight. I would say we focused our studies on the story lines of each noir we watched and payed attention to all the little details that make a film noir dark themed. Then we started coming up with ideas of our own. To come up with a good story idea our group had regular meetings and noted down a lot of things as we developed on our idea and changed certain things as we made progress. I'd say in total roughly we had 4 meetings. On the last meeting we had we recorded all of what was said and then posted it on Blogger.

In the story My role was the previous husband of Dennis who dies just before the story of the film begins. Dennis's character was the crazy woman who murders her husband and Jacks character was the main character, The detective. Both Eyyaz and Jacq edited the film noir, I was on set as the sound man recording all of the sound and Mohammed was the camera man as well as Eyyaz as Eyyaz took on two roles in the making of Impure Truths.

Making the Noir took us 4 to 5 weeks. The reason why it took us so long to get everything done is because certain locations were unavailable at times and also there were times when some members of the crew/cast couldn't make it to the shoot so there were many delays.

I think that if we didn't have so much breaks, and every one was available more often, we could have finished the film noir a bit quicker and maybe improved things a bit and added a bit more detail but other than that I am happy with everything. I think the music was good, the acting and script was very good and the whole concept and twist was successfully hooking as a lot of my friends gave me good oral feed back about the noir.

Music video evaluation

Recently on our course we had to do a music video project where everyone in the class got into groups of 4 or 5 and made a music video. I teamed up with Eyyaz, Jacq and Mohammed.

The first thing we did as a group was research other music videos before coming up with our own idea and studied why they worked. We looked at things like the variety of shots that were used in a video, story lines videos may have had, visual effects and props, locations, the main message of the video if there was one and how the artists preformed.

After doing a bit of research we decided we would all individually pick a song and make up a possible music video idea for it and then at the end we would chose the best idea and develop on that specific idea.
Mohammed and Jacq couldn't really think of anything however me and Eyyaz had ideas. My idea was to do a parody of Kanye and Jayz's Ni**as in Paris song and Eyyaz wanted to do a first person story themed video to a remixed Daft Punk song by Glitch mob. Everyone in our group including myself though that it would be interesting and really good to try something different so we went with the Daft punk song idea as there were no lyrics in the song. After choosing Eyyaz's idea we then developed on the story.

My role in the video is the main character who picks up the package in oxford circus. The whole music video is the world through my characters eyes. Eyyaz's role was the man in the suit who chased after me to eventually end up killing my character. Jacq's Role in the video was tho help record and also act as Eyyaz's surprise partner in the video and finally Mohammed's role was to help record. The video was mostly edited by Eyyaz however me and Jacq had some input in the post production stage.

The video took us 3 weeks to get don because of the weather and also because not every one was free when we needed them to be. I think we should have made a weather plan to make sure everyone knew what days were dry and good enough to shoot on that way we could have possibly saved a lot of time. I think that we could of Possibly had the music video completed with in one week if we were more organised however I am pleased with the final video.

A Little About Me

Hello potential employer

My name is Jordan white and I am currently 19 years old. I have stayed in education up until this point and have one last year left at college before I go to university. I plan to continue my media studies at uni and also I've been thinking about taking a philosophy course as well.

In my spare time I like to learn new things and activities as well as practice other things I have picked up. for example, Last year I taught my self how to break dance and also how to do flips and other fancy Gymnastic related things. Recently I've been trying to learn the Finnish language as I have close friends who come from Finland. I also like to make video in my spare time and experiment with video special effects and also practice my writing skills by coming up with story lines and writing scripts.

As well as the skills I have picked up from my media course, I have also picked up skills for a door supervisor role as I took a 4 day course one half term and passed the final assessment on the last day. I now know what to do in a case of a fire whether I am doing a door supervisor or not as I was taught safety procedures and precautions.

I consider my self to be hard working, punctual, a good communicator and someone who can work really well whether alone or in a group/with a team.

Understanding the styles, Conventions, and techniques of Music videos

Music video's often usually have a certain style or theme to appeal to their target audience regardless of what genre the song is. Sometimes you may see a music video shot like a film telling a story rarely cutting to the person singing/rapping taking part or playing a roll in the story or you may watch a music video where the song is being preformed live. These are two different ways some artists can go about shooting their music videos, either in-concert live footage or in specific locations related to the story of the song. Sometimes music videos use both live performance and story telling technique and cut between the two styles of footage.  There are also other ways too like computerized animation or CGI animation and all sorts of other ways depending on how creative the producer can be.

Here is a music video by B.o.b that is completely made up of stop motion.

This video is completely made up of stop motion. The animation technique that was used through out the video for this video is call cut out animation. Although the video is stop motion animation, it still has a series of technical shots and camera angles in a certain order maintain the videos theme and also to tell the story of the main character as he expresses how he feels about a girl. The speed of the animation movements look like they have been edited to match the beat of the song making the song more interesting and catchy for the audience.

In this video, Limp Bizkit use a green screen and stationary motorbikes to relate to his lyric "My way or the high way".

This video is mostly made up of 5 different locations in terms of footage and story and is arithmetically edited (cut the the beat) and pieced together with a series of different shot angles to suit the songs semi-aggressive theme. The song seems like its about a relationship problem and the protagonist expressing his solution to the problem. I thing the cave men footage of the video is symbolism to represent either the main characters survival on his own or  possibly how he feels with his partner. The influence for this music video and song could have been a personal experience he had himself or the idea probably came from a movie or Tv show.

This is a recent music video by Jay-Z and Kanye West. This music video is live footage throughout

The footage used in this music video was from a live performance from more than one angle. The music video looks like live footage pieced together with a few visual effects and a few titles like the beginning titles "Kanye""Jay""Paris" and for the chorus "That Shit Crey". The story of this song doesn't seem to have much of a narrative, Just two people escaping to paris. The lyrics from both artists are the most important and meaningful things in this video as they sometimes may have more that on interpretation.

Understanding the Purpose of Music Videos

What is a music video

A music video is a short film that dictates or tells a story that relates to the song its about and is usually produced to promote the publicity of an artist and their music so that people can go out and buy their CD's or download their songs. Sometimes you often see the name of a record label shown at the end of a music video or at the start and that happens so that the label can get some recognition.

Here is an example of a video which dictates the songs story

Often in some music videos you'll notice items and other things being bleared out. That is because of advertisement and a trademark law. The trade mark law is mostly the reason why logo's and some display pictures in the back  ground of a music video may be bleared. Censoring out other trade  mark logos is done so that people don't get confused on the origin of a product or where it came from.

Here is an example of Logo's being censored in a music video

Music videos have been about for manny years since the 60's and have been becoming more and more famous over time. Most music videos nowadays are produced just to advertise and promote products and people as the music industry is more of a business.

People always get their ideas from many places like real life experience but sometimes  they may often take the idea from other people either pitching ideas or sometimes even copying already existing movies.

Most underground artists these days get their promotion through youtube or in their local areas and the difference you may notice with their videos is the style of music videos.

David Starkey News night comment

I am writing this letter to complain about David Starkey. His behaviour and some of the comments he made were very inappropriate. Some of the things David said was really offencive because he made it seem as if all black people in London were trouble makers and are the main influence to other. Over all his main point was negative and, I feel, aimed at black people and I think all the black veiwers shouldn't have had to see something so degrading on live TV across the UK. Its wrong that some veiwers could have possibly been made to feel so distant and feel as though they have done something wrong over skin colour in relation to the riots.
While I was watching the show I noticed most of the things he said was over the top, rude, stereotypical and just out of order and his comments were more or less derogatory and racist especially when he said "The whites have become black". Even though he is an important historian and expected to be very intelligent, he shouldnt be able to get away with the snide comments masking them up with intelligent metaphors such as referring to Dante's inferno.

OFCOM have said that his comments were for debate only and no rules were broken by OFCOM's opinion however it does break the guidelines of the BBC. 5.4.21 states "Output controllers and programme or content producers should ensure that strong language, especially the strongest language, is subject to careful consideration and appropriate referral, to ensure it is editorially justified, before it is included in our output."Starkey's comments throughout the whole interview showed that his behaviour was rude and also a bit aggressive with his tone in regards to the black community in the UK.

For all that I have just explained and shown to you, I ask that you take more consideration in closly monitoring the behaviour and attitudes of people such as David Starkey on your shows. Sometimes rude comments and racist remarks are not as obvious and are there but hidden. I thing the right thing to do at this point would be to ban Starkey because I could imagine a big precentage of the public think that he is wrong.

Thankyou for reading this.
